The influence of landscape and cityscape is ever present in Jones' work, despite her increasingly abstract execution. The surfaces of her paintings are built up with layers of pumice powder, over washed with oils or acrylics in earthy or grey tones which evoke the environment on which they are based. The image grows organically, as layers are built up and previous gestures are eradicated through carving back into the surface.

SUSAN LOUISE EVE HEYER
I am a London-based artist and trained at St. Martins College of Art and Byam Shaw School of Art. I have exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in London, Kent and India.
I was born in Lenham, Kent and spent my childhood in Canterbury, moving to Brixton, London in 1966. I studied Fine Art at St Martin’s School of Art and Byam Shaw School of Art from 1984 - 1988.
I paint mainly in oils on canvas and the subject matter of my work has been about reclaiming women who had been written out of history, ie: Lilith, Adam’s first wife before Eve, and Pope Joan 855 AD, putting the record straight. My work has developed from painting in a literal, narrative way, using symbols to represent these lost women, in a metaphorical way, to painting in an organic surrealist style. My inspiration comes from dreams.
I have travelled Sri Lanka, India and Nepal extensively, living and drawaing and painting in each country for a few months. I studied with a Master Thangka painter, Kumar Lama, in Pokhara, Nepal for six months and also had a studio in Kerala, South India, where I also exhibited my work.
My other interests include photography, video-making and teaching art.
I am currently living and painting in Brixton, London, England.

'I find modern art a soothing world in which I can resource myself. My photographs are often inspired by the works of artists such as Rothko or Pollock and architects like le Corbusier or Walter Gropius. I 'paint' with my camera to capture the abstract out of a concrete world'.

An atmospheric and eerie collection of photographs of mixed media still lifes.

I enjoyed art at school and hadn't produced anything artistic for years. I went on a short art course in July 2003 and discovered how out of practise I was at basic sketching. I was determined to restore my ability. So armed with a sketchbook always in my possession and my main spare time being my lunch breaks I go to the park or cafés. I enjoy drawing 21st century café life. My unwitting 'models' are often 'moving targets', and are sometimes 'quietly cursed' for leaving just I'm starting to draw them! I started with soft pencil, then a designer friend suggested using graphite. This was another phase. At the end of 2005 I started to do ink drawings and sometimes use bleach to give a two tone effect/or 'flesh tones'. I have worked with acrylic, mixed media, charcoal and printing. I am also inspired by holidays and produce quite a diverse selection of paintings, etchings and ink sketches, as I attend various 'taster' art courses. I am a volunteer helper for the 'Big Draw' each year and have found this another source of inspiration. Whilst I have taken part in various exhibitions, at the Alma in September 2009, will the first time that I have attempted a sizeable collection of my work. I would like to thank Julia McCabe for 'the kick start' and Jim & Sue at the Brockwell (BACS) Framers for being incredibly supportive. Sheila Ann Hearsum
